Welcome to Charlottesville Food Justice
We believe a food secure Charlottesville is possible. That achieving a food secure city is within our reach if we have the courage to do what hasn't been done in our city before. Through food justice, we are called upon to consider and approach food as a basic human right. It challenges us to tackle food insecurity through the lens of social justice to advance true sustainable change.
Join the Movement
We advocate for a diverse group of citizens...
They're students, refugees, small farmers — both rural and urban, public housing residents, and so much more.
Food unites us all, but access is not equal. Join the movement for a Food Secure City.

What We Do |
Igniting Dialogue & Hosting Events |
Building Supportive Networks |
The Charlottesville Food Justice Network believes in igniting genuine dialogue and convening our city around a core vision. We host a series of events such as round tables and conferences, deliver presentations on our research findings, and invite powerful food justice activist to inform our local movement.
Approaching Food As a Human RightOur food system does not serve us all equally. The result of this inequality can be seen in the health inequities apparent across race and class. Food justice calls upon us to develop tools and frameworks to adequately address these race and class food related inequities.

We are a collaborative of over 20 organizations working at the intersection of food and education, public housing, church communities, urban agriculture, environmental protection, urban planning, farming, and health systems. We support one another as we craft food justice practices for our various sectors.
Addressing Systems ChangeWe are a group of organizations representing different sectors within a larger system. Working alongside one another, we hope to address systems change through City and University collaborations and resident support and engagement.

“I have the audacity to believe that people everywhere can have three meals a day for their bodies, education and culture for their minds and dignity, equality and freedom for their spirits.”
-Martin Luther King Jr. on Food Justice
